Navigating addiction treatment is difficult for anyone, but if you or your loved one is neurodivergent, a traditional, one-size-fits-all rehab environment may not always account for differences in communication, sensory needs, or social comfort. Highly stimulating group environments and overwhelming sensory experiences can make it hard to feel comfortable and focus on recovery.
At Wolf Creek Recovery, we regularly work with autistic and neurodivergent adults experiencing substance use disorders alongside co-occurring mental health conditions. Our objective is never to “treat,” mask, or change your neurodivergence. Instead, we build individualized dual diagnosis care around you so you can develop practical recovery and life skills in an environment that respects who you are.
Our approach to addiction treatment for autistic adults recognizes that communication, sensory needs, social comfort, and independence can all affect the treatment experience.
Recovery does not follow the same timeline for everyone. For those who benefit from additional consistency and time to integrate new skills, care can extend to 120 days or longer based on individual needs and progress.
Bespoke Care for Co-Occurring Conditions
We recognize that autism is not an addiction or a condition to be “corrected.” Instead, our clinical team thoughtfully considers how your neurodivergence may affect your experience in substance use treatment.
Rather than expecting you to adapt to a rigid program, we tailor your treatment plan around your unique:
- Communication style and preferences
- Sensory sensitivities
- Social comfort levels
- Emotional regulation needs
- Distress tolerance
- Daily living skills and level of independence
- Need for time and space to decompress
When you enter treatment for substance use, we look at the complete picture of your well-being. By integrating co-occurring mental health care with addiction treatment, we provide structure that supports recovery while maintaining the flexibility required for you to feel safe, respected, and meaningfully engaged.
How Wolf Creek Recovery Supports Neurodivergent Clients
There is no single way to experience treatment. You may feel comfortable sharing in a group, or you may need more time to observe. You may benefit from deep community connection, or you may easily become overstimulated by prolonged social interaction. Our program structure allows care to respond to these differences.
An Intimate, Low-Pressure Environment
Large or highly stimulating groups may feel overwhelming for some neurodivergent clients. Wolf Creek Recovery uses small groups to create a supportive, lower-pressure environment. This gives room to participate at a manageable pace instead of feeling lost in a crowded facility. In these small settings, we focus on developing vital skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and everyday independent functioning.
Our approach combines evidence-based therapies like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and group counseling with holistic practices such as mindfulness, fitness, and nutritional support. This integrated model gives clients the tools they need to heal on multiple levels, helping them lay the foundation for long-term success.
Connection Without Forced Participation
While community is a cornerstone of recovery, authentic connection does not require constant social interaction. Our family-style environment allows you to build meaningful relationships with peers while respecting your personal boundaries. You are encouraged to connect while also having space to step away, decompress, and reset when needed.
DBT, CBT, and Nervous-System Regulation
Our clinical approach incorporates Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and trauma-informed care. For our neurodivergent clients, these approaches focus on practical, sustainable coping strategies rather than attempting to alter core aspects of your identity, with nervous-system regulation prioritized throughout.
Time in Nature and Space to Reset
Recovery requires significant emotional work. At Wolf Creek Recovery, you have time and space to step away from clinical stimulation when needed. Wolf Creek Recovery provides regular access to nature and the outdoors within a safe, contained setting. For those who benefit from quieter spaces, outdoor time can provide another setting to decompress and reset.
Is Wolf Creek Recovery the Right Fit?
Finding the right dual diagnosis care for an autistic or neurodivergent adult requires asking more than just whether a facility treats addiction. You need to know that the environment can accommodate sensory needs, communication preferences, boundaries, and level of independence.
Wolf Creek Recovery offers individualized care, small-group support, practical skill development, and flexibility designed to support recovery without trying to change who you are.
Our goal is to help neurodivergent clients develop the skills and stability needed for recovery and everyday life without trying to change who they are.
Our admissions team is available 24/7 to confidentially discuss your individual needs and determine if our environment is the right fit for your journey.
