Phase One Addiction Treatment

Wolf Creek Recovery offers a three-phase treatment approach that starts with Phase One.

This stage focuses on therapeutic interventions and strategies to help clients build a healthy foundation. Clients are educated on the disease model of addiction and receive psychiatric treatment and medication, if needed.

During Phase One of treatment, clients uncover the root cause of their substance use and how their thoughts and actions influence their behaviors. Our treatment team also begins to familiarize clients with the 12-step philosophy and how each step leads to healing and liberation.

Your individual time in Phase One depends on what our clinical team feels is necessary. Some of the goals we hope to see you achieve before moving onto Phase Two are medical stabilization, an understanding of addiction and the development of new and healthy patterns of behavior.

What Does Phase One Entail?

Phase One Treatment in Arizona
Because treatment programs typically last for one to three months, some people are under the impression that this is all they need to kick their habit. However, recovery is an ongoing process that requires hard work and diligence. This is why a healthy foundation is crucial to sobriety.

Phase One is a strong foundational program that comes after medical detox. You will receive an individualized treatment plan that addresses your clinical and medical needs. These plans are reviewed regularly and can be modified to fit your unique strengths and challenges.

Below is a quick breakdown on what to expect from Phase One. We’ll go over each of these in more detail in the next section. If you have questions about Phase One treatment, contact Wolf Creek Recovery directly to speak with one of our owners.

Individual Therapy

Each week, you will work one-on-one with your clinician in a safe and caring environment. Your clinician will talk you through problems and situations that cause anger, grief, conflict or stress and help you develop healthy ways to cope. You can use individual therapy to cover immediate issues in your life, as well as more complex problems that will affect you in the longer term.

The benefits of primary therapy include:

  • Gain a better understanding of yourself
  • Learn how to effectively handle your emotions
  • Identify underlying causes of substance use
  • Discover new coping mechanisms
  • Replace destructive behaviors with healthy behaviors

EMDR/Trauma Therapy

In addition to primary therapy, you will also receive Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy once a week. EMDR is a common technique for clients dealing with trauma and other mental health issues.

During this eight-phase therapy, you will safely reprocess traumatic information and learn different ways to handle this emotional distress. While the traumatic memories can’t be erased, they will no longer produce negative symptoms. This happens because the natural healing powers of the brain are able to come forward.

Other evidence-based therapies that may be used to treat dual diagnosis are cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and motivational interviewing (MI). Your Phase One treatment plan will be unique to your needs and include the therapies we feel will benefit you most.

Family Therapy

Once a week, you will participate in family therapy, a time to connect with family in person, over the phone or via Skype or Zoom. Addiction is a family disease – not an individual disease. Therefore, your family needs to heal alongside you. This is important for them, and it also allows them to provide you with a stable and supportive environment conducive to long-term healing.

Wolf Creek Recovery places much value on family therapy. As individuals in recovery, we know how important the family unit is. Individuals in recovery need their families to lift them up, provide unconditional support and understanding and hold them accountable for their actions. Anyone invested in your recovery is welcome to participate in our family therapy sessions.

Group Therapy

Phase One Treatment - Group Therapy

Group therapy is an effective part of Phase One treatment. It’s normal to feel weary of group therapy because you may be a private person and not ready to share the details of your personal life. But, many people end up liking group therapy and are pleasantly surprised to see how much they get out of this time. By keeping an open mind, you can get the same value out of these group discussions.

It’s important to know that group therapy is flexible and allows you to move at your own pace. Some clients are eager to share their story while others take longer to warm up. Even if you choose just to listen at first, you are still developing a sense of connection that will help you feel less alone in your struggles.

The most important benefits of participating in group therapy are:

  • Feel connected to others
  • Establish relapse prevention strategies
  • Work on anger management skills
  • Improve communication skills
  • Give and receive a broad range of feedback
  • Let our clinicians see how you interact with others

Introduction to the 12 Steps

The 12 steps are a set of guiding principles for people in recovery. You do not have to be religious to follow the 12 steps. While there is emphasis on a higher power, this can be anything you want it to be – anything greater than yourself. During the 12-step process, you will explore a set of realizations, make amends and prepare for the future.

Our reason for following the 12 steps is because we’ve seen positive outcomes for ourselves and our clients. The 12 steps touch on some of our deepest feelings and make it easier to avoid temptation. Furthermore, the 12-step philosophy focuses on both practical and emotional components such as honesty, reliability and mutual support.

Holistic Therapy

Wolf Creek Recovery incorporates holistic therapies and activities into our treatment phases. They help clients process their emotions, manage their symptoms and establish healthy habits. Holistic therapies work best when used in conjunction with evidence-based therapies like EMDR or motivational interviewing.

One of the reasons why we’re in support of holistic therapies is because they promote complete healing for the mind, body and spirit. You’ll learn how to eat healthy, incorporate fitness into your routine and connect with a higher power. All of these components work together to create a strong and resilient foundation.

Of course, we leave time for fun, too! You will have access to outdoor activities and recreational fun such as golf, basketball, tennis and softball. Staying active and spending time outdoors boosts the mood, fights depression and keeps you grounded in your recovery.
