Substance use disorders can be all-consuming. They impact every area of life: relationships, hobbies, jobs, and more. 6.8% of people in Arizona had a substance use disorder in 2019 and know what that feels like. At Wolf Creek Recovery, we do too. Most of our staff is in recovery, just like everyone who steps through our doors looking for treatment.

Did you know there’s a way to loosen the grip of substances on your life without putting any responsibilities at home on hold? If you need treatment for a substance use disorder or mental health condition, but can’t stay overnight in an inpatient program, our partial hospitalization program (PHP) may be right for you.

What We Do: What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) consists of various intensive therapies during the day in person, while allowing you to stay outside of the facility overnight. It is a step up from outpatient programs, requiring you to spend more time with us, but not as much as you would during an inpatient program.

We treat substance use disorders and mental health conditions in our PHP, whether they occur together or only one is present. We offer care for alcohol, opioid, stimulant, ketamine, benzodiazepine, marijuana, and hallucinogen use disorders. We also treat depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, trauma, and gambling addiction.

How We Treat: What to Expect From a Partial Hospitalization Program

While partial hospitalization programs don’t involve 24/7 care, treatment is comprehensive and customized to suit your needs. At Wolf Creek Recovery, you’ll participate in 12-step programs, individual and group therapy, and outdoor activities to build relationships and healthy coping mechanisms, all while staying in housing provided by us when you aren’t in therapy.

Some therapy modalities we utilize are:

  • Rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT). Not every facility does this, and it’s part of what makes Wolf Creek Recovery unique. You’ll start to replace negative emotions and thought processes with empowering ones, building self-esteem and confidence.
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). You’ll learn to recognize negative thought processes and challenge them.
  • Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). You’ll learn how to manage intense emotions and cope with them safely.
  • Motivational interviewing (MI). You’ll discover new motivation and purpose to achieve positive change in your life.
  • Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). You’ll begin to properly process trauma and deal with cravings through simple movements.
  • Outdoor adventure therapy. You’ll participate in activities like camping, paddleboarding, and canoeing in a safe and encouraging environment.
  • Family therapy. Family members will find new ways to relate to each other, identify unhealthy roles they’re playing, uncover unaddressed emotions, build communication skills, and conquer their challenges together.

How Long Does a Partial Hospitalization Program Last?

Time spent in PHP depends on your progress and what will work best for your recovery. PHP can last anywhere from 30-90 days, and we recommend staying in the program as long as possible.

How long you spend in PHP per week also depends on your unique treatment plan, but 20 hours per week is the minimum. Most often, people in treatment will attend PHP five days a week for multiple hours per day.

How to Know if Partial Hospitalization Is Needed: Is PHP Right for Me or a Loved One?

PHP is a great option if you need intensive treatment, but don’t need to stay at a facility overnight and focus on recovery 24/7. You can also start applying what you learn in PHP to your life immediately as you work toward recovery.

We also recommend PHP for people who complete our inpatient program, because it’s an ideal transition from constant care and supervision to returning to everyday life.
