Wolf Creek’s Extended Care Program

Addiction is a progressive disease that doesn’t get better on its own.

The good news is that substance use disorders can be successfully treated with the right combination of care. The recovery process starts with detox, goes into therapy and then branches off to aftercare as people transition back home.

However, many people are uninformed when it comes to how long they need to spend in treatment. There’s a misconception that people only need 30 days to get sober and return to regular life. While 30 days is a great start, it’s usually not enough to treat addiction.

Here at Wolf Creek, we encourage our clients to look at addiction treatment as a spectrum. By moving through this continuum, clients are able to transition through various levels of care while having support to guide them. In other words, we meet the client where they are and prepare them for reintegration.

Wolf Creek’s Extended Care Program is an extended program beyond 90 days.  We realize that not everyone is able to spend several months in a recovery program, but we highly suggest it if you can. Those who participate in a program of this sort have improved outcomes.

Who is a Good Candidate for Extended Care?

Anyone struggling with a substance use problem can sign up for our Extended Care Program. However, we realize that committing to long term treatment can feel overwhelming. We encourage you to speak with our admissions department to determine the best fit for your needs.

In general, we tend to recommend our Extended Care Program to those who are at a higher risk for a complicated recovery process. Below are a few examples:

  • Severe risk of withdrawal symptoms
  • Underlying medical conditions
  • Concurrent mental health disorders
  • Lack of success in shorter-term program
  • Unstable or unhealthy home environment

If you are dealing with any of these issues, we encourage you to consider long-term addiction treatment. You’ll have the continued support you need to transition into everyday life while reducing the risk for relapse.

Advantages to Expect from a Long-Term Program

Our Extended Care Program is similar to our traditional outpatient programs, except that it lasts longer and continues providing support as you return home and ease back into a normal routine. As part of the program, you’ll also continue attending outpatient therapy sessions, taking the appropriate medications and participating in support groups.

The benefits of taking part in our Extended Care Program are:

  • Develop solid coping strategies and relapse prevention techniques that you can practice in the real world
  • Explore and address all of the issues that may have led to your substance use
  • Give yourself plenty of time to heal and balance your brain chemistry – this lowers your risk for relapse
  • Mend broken relationships with family and friends; build healthy relationships with others in recovery
  • Develop essential life skills that will help you regain employment and independence
