Mental Health and Substance Use Treatment for Co-occurring Disorders at Wolf Creek

Treating co-occurring substance use and mental health diagnoses

In 2023, 35% of Arizonans reported experiencing symptoms of depression or anxiety.

That number could be even higher – not everybody likes to share their most vulnerable feelings in a survey. A lot of times, people don’t tell anybody else about those feelings at all.

That’s even more true if they’re among the 46.3 million Americans who had a substance use disorder in 2021. That’s double the stigma, but it’s also double the reason to get help.

That’s why Wolf Creek Recovery treats both mental health and substance use disorders at the same time. We want you and the people you love to heal on every front, from the inside out. That means addressing everything that’s keeping you from living a life you love.

What We Treat: Mental Health Conditions and Substance Use Disorders

“Mental health services” is a little vague as a phrase. What does it even mean?

It means that Wolf Creek can diagnose and treat co-occurring mental health conditions for anyone in our programs. This includes conditions like depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and OCD. You’ll receive an assessment early on in our program, and then your mental health symptoms will be addressed as a part of your individualized addiction treatment plan. At our medical staff’s discretion, we can also manage any prescriptions you need. This is referred to as “dual diagnosis” treatment.

In some cases, a mental health concern may be too acute or require a different level of care than Wolf Creek provides. In these cases, we will refer you to a provider who can give you the right care for your situation.

We also offer grief counseling for those who are impacted by a recent loss. These experiences can be traumatic, and extensive trauma-informed therapy is available for both loss and other events, such as abuse, accidents, natural disasters, illness, and more. Family therapy is also an option when entire family units need help healing.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment: Wolf Creek’s Treatment Options and Therapies

Because mental healthcare is part of your comprehensive substance use disorder treatment, you’ll participate in our primary partial hospitalization program (PHP). There, you’ll receive treatment at our facility during the day, and return to housing we provide for you at night.

Therapy is at the core of our treatment. You’ll have a lot of therapy options to choose from, so you can find just the right fit for your recovery. The primary therapy options we use are:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Thoughts are a huge component of mental health conditions, and this therapy option focuses on how you can turn negative ones into positive ones. It’s at the core of most mental health treatment, ours included.

  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). This option includes identifying intense emotions and learning to manage and cope with them in a healthy way.

  • Motivational Interviewing (MI). This therapy enables you to find the motivation you need to fulfill your goals and achieve recovery.

  • Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). REBT helps you identify and challenge beliefs you have that are leading to harmful behavior and teaches you how to replace those beliefs with positive ones.

  • Trauma-Focused Therapy. From grief counseling to therapy focused on other traumas, you’ll learn more about the negative experiences influencing your conditions, and how to cope with them in a healthy way. Trauma can be particularly difficult to deal with. Our therapists have specialized training and certifications that enable them to address your trauma in a sensitive and respectful manner so you won’t be  triggered or retraumatized. All of our therapists approach you with compassion and understanding to go at the pace that is right for you.
    • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Through eye movements and light hand movements, EMDR allows you to conquer trauma and process triggering memories so they don’t have a hold on you anymore.

  • Outdoor Adventure Experiences. You’ll enjoy the great outdoors and have some fun with activities like canoeing and camping, and sports like softball, golf, and basketball, just to name a few.

We also offer alternative therapies to supplement your healing process, because we think having fun and making friends in the process is an important part of building a substance-free life. These are available to anyone in inpatient treatment, no matter their experience level with any of the options.

Outdoor adventure therapy is one of these, which includes fun experiences like camping and canoeing. We also offer a variety of sports, such as softball, tennis, pickleball, disc golf, golf, and basketball. You’re never required to participate in any of our outdoor activities during your inpatient treatment. We encourage it because it’s a great way to learn skills, have fun, and build relationships. You may even find a new hobby to continue outside of your time with us!

How to Know If Dual Diagnosis Treatment Is Right for You

When you enter treatment with Wolf Creek for a substance use disorder, your mental health will also be assessed. This will help you decide if dual diagnosis treatment will help you. The only way to clinically determine if you have a mental health condition is to be evaluated and diagnosed by a trained and certified professional.

For general reference, though, a good rule of thumb is to think about how much of an impact your symptoms have on your life. Some anxiety is just part of the human condition, and so is being sad. If those feelings last for a long time, at a high intensity, then it’s a good time to consider treatment.
