- Group therapy. With cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as the foundation, you’ll share your experiences and learn from others who understand where you’re coming from.
- Outdoor adventure therapy. You’ll play team sports, canoe, camp, paddleboard, and more to build skills and experience some of the fun a substance-free life has to offer.
Does Your Loved One Have a Substance Use Disorder? Look for These Signs That They Need Treatment
To get your loved one the help they need, you need to understand what they’re living with. How do you know if they really have a substance use disorder, or if it’s “bad enough” to warrant treatment?
Here’s a list of signs you can use as reference:
- They take more of the substance than they intended to
- They’ve tried to cut down on the substance but didn’t succeed
- They crave the substance
- They get sick when they don’t have the substance (withdrawal)
- They’re ignoring responsibilities because of the substance
- They spend a lot of time getting, taking, and recovering from the substance
- They’re still taking the substance even though it’s clearly hurting their health and/or relationships
- They do risky things like driving while under the influence of the substance
You should also look for poor hygiene, frequent illness, secretive behavior, and borrowing money as potential evidence of a substance use disorder. The more signs you see, the more important it is to get treatment.
